Songs You Might Have Missed #197

Ed Sheeran: “The A Team” (2012)

“The A Team”, from English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran’s 2012 debut album, was a top five single in at least seven countries, although it missed the top 40 here. Its story is based on a girl named Angel, whom Ed met while working in a homeless shelter.

In a Billboard magazine interview, Sheeran explained the song’s title thusly: “A drug like crack cocaine is called a ‘class A’ drug. That’s in the same category as heroin. Instead of making it clear and just saying what the problem was, I’d say, ‘She’s in the ‘class A’ team.’ It was kind of my way of covering up (a person’s addiction), I guess, making it a bit more subtle.”
