The Sound of Music will forever be remembered as one of America’s most legendary musicals. The ‘cult classic’ even won five Academy Awards and two Golden Globes as proof of its popularity and brilliance. While the show was and is still extremely popular, there are many behind the scenes happenings that may puzzle or surprise even the biggest fans of the show. Keep reading to find out about these secrets and get an inside scoop on where the actors of the von Trapp family up to presently.
Maria Didn’t Actually Love Captain Von Trapp
The Sound of Music based on real persons. Maria, the nun-in-training, was very much real along with the rest of the Von Trapp family. However, in real life, she wasn’t actually in love with Captain Von Trapp as the film made it seem.
Maria herself made this very clear in her 1948 memoir where she said “I liked him, but I didn’t love him. However, I loved the children, and so in a way, I really married the children.”
Liesl Didn’t Actually Fall In Love With A Nazi
In the film, Liesl, the eldest daughter falls in love with a Nazi soldier who would soon try to expose the entire family. However, this did not happen in real life as the eldest of the von Trapp children was really a boy named Rupert. This story was invented by the writers of the show who believed this twist would add more depth to a dull, boring storyline. Funny enough, by the time the film was released, Rupert was 54 and lived and worked in Vermont as a physician. He would often tell his patients that he was Liesl but no one actually believed him.
