Phoenix: “If I Ever Feel Better” (2000)

Although French synth/soul band Phoenix share roots with Daft Punk (keyboardist/guitarist Laurent Brancowitz was formerly with short-lived band Darlin, as were both Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo of the more famous EDM band) on their debut they established more of a breezy sound reminiscent of 70’s California pop and FM “Yacht Rock”.

Though this band will never make footprints as large as, say, Steely Dan, they can be appreciated by fans of such “lite rock” heavyweights.

Jeff Lynne has revealed he’s working on new ELO material.

And he says he’s planning more live dates following his appearance at London’s Hyde Park earlier this year – an event he feared could have been a disaster.

Lynne picked up the Outstanding Contribution award at the Classic Rock Roll Of Honour event in LA this week and had previously hinted at bringing ELO back. Now he’s confirmed future plans are in place.

Is Technology Taking the Romance Out of Weddings?

Reprinted from Huff Post Weddings

by Kate L. Harrision

Remember the days when couples anxiously awaited pictures from their photographer for their first glimpse of the special day when they exchanged vows? Ya, me neither. For better or worse, it seems like cell phones and selfies have been woven into the fabric of wedding day celebrations. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good selfie, but I can’t help but cringe when guests’ cell phones take up more real estate in wedding photos than the floral arrangements.

Call me old fashioned, but I still believe that weddings should be romantic. Saying your vows in front of your friends and family is (hopefully) a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Taking cell phone pictures and guests getting in the way of the photographer you paid $3,000 to be there just takes away that wedding day sparkle.

So where should you draw the line? Where can technology enhance the experience and when is it just a romance killer? Here’s my quick list of wedding technology dos and don’ts to help keep you firmly grounded in the beautiful reality of your wedding day.

Lost Art of Album Covers

Having posted here the lamentable news that 2014 will go down as the first year with zero platinum-selling albums since the inception of platinum certification, I think it worth pointing out that as the album’s importance diminishes, something else is lost: the emphasis on great cover art.

Since the era of the Beatles, when the LP first gained preeminence, iconic album art has played a major role. It grabbed your attention on the record store shelf. It summed up a record’s message, style or attitude. It could convey one more layer of meaning, beyond music and lyric. Great album covers became emblematic of the great works within.

Album covers were routinely perused, often while the music played, as fans gazed at images of their heroes, or searched for additional clues as to the music’s meaning, or simply lost themselves in a fanciful alternate reality.
