Rye Rye: Boom Boom

Known as the Voice of Baltimore, rapper/dancer Rye Rye may be a lot more familiar to the rest of the world by week’s end. Her new single, “Boom Boom” will be released this Tuesday and it has the sound of a dance floor hit.

The song samples the chorus hook from Dutch Eurodance group Vengaboys’ 1999 hit “Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom”, which was top 10 all over the world except the US (#84). But Rye Rye’s rap verses take it more into Nicki Minaj territory. I think this one’s gonna be big.

Abbey Road Crosswalk: Live Webcam

It may be the most-often imitated album cover of all time. And so many tourists want to do so that Abbey Road Studios has set up a live webcam for you to watch. See that group of 2-4 people standing at the cross walk at midday? They’re most likely waiting to risk their lives to strike the iconic pose.

Marshall Crenshaw: “You’re My Favorite Waste of Time” (1982)

A little Starburst Fruit Chew of a pop song. “Meaningless and ridiculous“…and also quite catchy.

Midlake: “Acts Of Man” (2010)

A somberific soundtrack to winter hibernation, with its deep drums, flute and dolorous vocal. Add a mellotron solo and a little sitar in the edges and you’d have something that belongs on a 1968 Moody Blues album. And that’s meant as the highest praise.

Forro In The Dark with David Byrne: “Asa Branca” (2006)

Forro (pronounced “fo-ho”) is a style of very percussion-based Brazilian dance music. Forro In The Dark, a New York-based group of Brazilian ex-pats who were playing a weekly gig at a club called Nublu, came to the attention of fellow New Yorker David Byrne, who then collaborated with them on their 2006 album. Here he sings the vocals in English of Brazilian standard “Asa Brance”.
