Karl Hendricks Buys Paul’s CDs

Very nice piece from Thursday’s Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about Karl Hendricks taking over Paul’s CDs in Bloomfield and renaming it Sound Cat Records. I’ve been a customer of the store for about twenty years myself and can’t say enough good things about Karl (or Paul, Jason and John). We need to keep stores like this one alive–in Pittsburgh or whatever city you happen to live.
Here’s a map to help you find the friendliest, coolest record and CD store in the ‘Burgh. If you’ve never been there, please check them out!

Hello readers! I have been out of commission and haven’t commented in a while, but I thought I’d throw in my two cents:
Going to Paul’s was always a memorable experience for me, even if I was always way too young to appreciate the value of a great record store. I didn’t even come to appreciate independent record stores until much later, when I moved away to college. What I know now that I couldn’t have known, tagging along on my dad’s dips into those ecclectic waters, was that stores like this are rare, and a valuable commodity. Nationwide, stores like Paul’s CDs are shuttering their doors and it’s a damned shame. I’ve been to record stores all over this country, from hole in the wall Philly record joints with dusty Drifters albums in the dollar bins to world famous used music stores like LA’s Amoeba records and I can say from experience that there is a very understated value in the kind of personal service you’d get (and I remember my dad getting) at Paul’s in Pittsburgh.
Please do your part in keeping places like this alive. I’m not saying this because I think Barnes and Noble and Best Buy are evil entities, but because the world needs more places like this.
When you buy a car you go to someone who knows about cars, why not buy music from the experts, and someone who will treat you like a human being.
