Songs You May Have Missed #404

The Shins: “Gone for Good” (2003)

From one of the best releases of 2003, by one of the best bands of any era. James Mercer’s songwriting is subtle and seemingly effortless, and the band’s arrangements combine elements of classic pop music and other styles in fresh and interesting ways, such as the layers of twang dripping like chocolate syrup all over this pretty tune.

I’m a huge Shins fan. It’s funny how you picked this particular song from all of their others. Sea Legs and Phantom Limb are my absolute favorites and their 2012 Port of Morrow album is awesome. I’ve overlooked this song before but I have to admit, after listening to it again, I have a new appreciation. If you’re a James Mercer fan you really should give his Broken Bells album another listen though.

Yeah, there are lots of Mercer songs that deserve mention. I don’t think this is the last one you’ll see here.
