fun.

fun.: “At Least I’m Not As Sad (As I Used To Be)” (2009)

Well I had a feeling I should have posted this song a month ago. As it is I didn’t get around to it until their new album made its debut at #3 (last week) and the ubiquitous single “We Are Young” went to #1 (this week), stealing some of my hip cred in recommending this bit o’ honey from their previous album. This is a great little band that I almost hate to see blow up, ’cause instead of standing five rows deep at Mr. Small’s on June 15 I’ll now most likely be looking on from an additional 75 feet away at Stage AE.

There’s a touch of Queen in the compressed harmonies here, as well as the theatrical slow-down near the end (inspired by taking in Broadway shows during a NY visit I understand). In other words, this is a band who borrows from the right sources. When I heard them in ’09 I thought they’d be my little secret. But it’s great for the state of Pop music that bands like this are able make it big.

way street

4 Way Street: “Barbed Wire” (2003)

The Philadelphia foursome known as 4 Way Street is comprised of Ben Arnold, Jim Boggia, Scott Bricklin and Joseph Parsons. They’d each achieved a degree of notoriety on their own before forming the folk/country/rock group that recorded one CD in 2003. Their name seems an obvious nod to the CSNY album by the same name. And they do a fair Eagles impersonation (or at least Poco) on this track.

Jump, Little Children: “Cathedrals” (1998)

In this Carolina band’s earlier incarnation it had more of an Irish sound, thanks to a trip they took to Ireland to gain first-hand knowledge of Irish music. Upon their return and subsequent time spent busking on street corners, their sound became more of an eclectic mix of Irish and American influences. “Cathedrals” isn’t typical of their generally lively sound. But it is their best-known song and most beautiful ballad.

snider

Todd Snider: “The Ballad of the Kingsmen” (2004)

Todd Snider ties it all together: out of control kids, Marilyn Manson, war, teen massacre, the hypocrisy of adult role models, and “Louie, Louie”.

Marshall Crenshaw: “You’re My Favorite Waste of Time” (1982)

A little Starburst Fruit Chew of a pop song. “Meaningless and ridiculous“…and also quite catchy.

midlake

Midlake: “Acts Of Man” (2010)

A somberific soundtrack to winter hibernation, with its deep drums, flute and dolorous vocal. Add a mellotron solo and a little sitar in the edges and you’d have something that belongs on a 1968 Moody Blues album. And that’s meant as the highest praise.
