Jellyfish: “That Is Why” (1990)
Jellyfish were a short-lived psychedelic-tinged power pop band who only recorded two studio albums but cast a long shadow on the genre. Their McCartneyesque harmonies and sweet melodic pop might have found a wider audience in any era other than the early 1990’s.
Their two highly-regarded albums, 1990’s Bellybutton and 1993’s Spilt Milk are touchstones of ambitious power pop and well worth seeking out for fans of bands like XTC and Crowded House.

I remember you putting this on a power pop mixtape. This song is so catchy and does everything right- great chorus, great harmony. Plus, “partly cloudy with trouser stains” is a brilliant line.
Have you heard their medley of “Let ‘Em In/That is Why” from a recent (2006 I think) best of collection? I found it on Spotify this morning! I associate this band with bands like Owsley and Sam Philips because of the playlist you concocted once.

I just got to the end of this Jellyfish medly. The guitarist plays a little riff to Frampton at the end of the live track. Look it up!

Yeah, I have that live medley–it’s way cool. I thought I’d played that Frampton riff for you once before. They also do a nice live version of “No Matter What”

By the way, you gave away two of my near-future posts in Owsley and Sam Phillips!
